Bosch Debuts Aftermarket Starters For Start/Stop Vehicles

New Aftermarket Starters For Start/Stop Vehicles from Bosch

Robert Bosch LLC, major supplier of start/stop systems and components to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) has announced the availability of aftermarket starters for vehicles equipped with these systems.

The advantages of start/stop systems are compelling: The engine cuts out automatically when the vehicle is stationary and therefore stops burning fuel. This saves fuel even during short stops, after just 0.7 seconds.

Studies show this results in up to eight percent saving in fuel economy overall compared to vehicles with conventional engines.

According to Bosch, seven (7) percent of new cars sold in the U.S. today are equipped with stop/start engines and sources estimate that the number is expected to increase to 57 percent by the year 2020.

Some European vehicle manufacturers are planning to have 100 percent of their U.S. vehicle offering equipped with start/stop systems as early as 2017. Domestic manufacturers could offer 50 to 60 percent start/stop-equipped models by the year 2020.

Starters for start/stop systems are specially constructed to last through many more starting events than conventional starters. Therefore, they include many enhanced technical features such as: •

  • reinforced bearings
  • enhanced planetary gear unit
  • heavy duty meshing mechanism
  • optimized commutator

The Bosch starters are engineered to deliver up to 3.5 times the number of cycles of a conventional starter.
