City of Boston is Achieving 28% Improvement in MPG by adding Hybrid Electric Drive Systems

The City of Boston’s Central Fleet Management Division is responsible for acquisition, remarketing, and repair and maintenance services for a diversified fleet of 1,100 municipal vehicles and equipment. With the city’s Greenovate Boston Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050, the city strives to replace part of their fleet each year with vehicles that reduce environmental impact and help improve fleet operation efficiencies.

To help meet their goal, the city has upfitted 13 of their Ford and GM vans and shuttles with the XL3® Hybrid Electric Drive System. Available on Class 2-6 vehicles, the XL Hybrids system increases a vehicles MPG driven by adding an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and control software without significant vehicle modifications.

So far with over 100,000 cumulative road miles, the City of Boston is achieving 28% improvement in miles driven per gallon and has reduced their CO2 emissions by 22% with the XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System. The City of Boston achieved these results on vehicles that are driven in heavy urban environment and through variable weather conditions including winter show and summer heat.

All XL Hybrid vehicles are equipped with XL Link™ wireless data connectivity system. With information from XL Link, XL Hybrids provides City of Boston central fleet management with reports about MPG performance, CO2 emissions and vehicle uptime. In addition, the XL Link tracks key performance indicators like idling and vehicle duty cycles.

Based on these results, the City has committed to purchase eight more XL Hybrids conversions in the coming months of 2016.
