NJ Commuters Slow to Board Mass Transit, Younger Workers Go Green
According to a recent report, commuters in New Jersey still prefer to get behind the wheel of their car for the daily commute, though the green trend may be brightening – a bit. Nearly 72 percent of NY residents dive alone to work, largely unchanged in the past eight years.
That said, younger residents are more likely to ride bikes, take trains or buses, or even walk – and four percent telecommute At the same time, the number of workers driving alone has actually increased slightly.
On the brighter side of the news, mass transit commuters – taking buses, trains and other public transportation to work – has risen to nearly 11 percent.
A closer look at the demographics reveals that the number of NJ drivers aged 20-44 who commute to work declined between 2007 and 2013, while the number in those age groups taking public transportation rose. Thus, proportionally, fewer workers ages 20-59 drove to work alone, and a greater percentage took public transportation in 2013 than in 2007, the data show.
