Formula E on a Roll with World’s First Fully Electric Racing Series
We have glimpsed into the future of formula racing and it may very well electrify even the most diehard fans.
Meet Formula E, a new FIA single-seater championship and the world’s first fully-electric racing series.
The inaugural season kick-started in Beijing in September 2014 and runs until June 2015, competing in 10 of the world’s leading cities including Miami, Berlin and London. A total of 10 teams, each with two drivers, race on temporary city-center circuits creating a unique and exciting series designed to appeal to a new generation of motor sport fans.
Formula E also aims to represent a vision for the future of the motor industry, serving as a framework for R&D around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting clean energy and sustainability.
From season two, Formula E will operate as an ‘open championship’, allowing teams and manufacturers the opportunity to showcase their own electrical energy innovations. Working to the technical specifications set out by the FIA, teams will focus their efforts on improving and developing powertrains and battery technology, with the aim of this filtering into the everyday electric vehicle market.
Miami victor Nicolas Prost
The most recent race was held in Miami where Nicolas Prost grabbed the lead from Lucas di Grassi.
The paddock at the Miami ePrix saw many guests and a VIP crowd but one man attracted the attention of the cameras and photographers, Sir Richard Branson. It was the Virgin Group founder’s first visit to a Formula E race but he proved once more his sense of the show first performing on the grid along with the cheerleaders of the Miami Dolphins NFL team and then being a surprise, at least for the drivers, at the podium ceremony.
