Recently, Government Fleet Magazine named Bill Griffiths, fleet division chief for Montgomery County, MD, the 2015 Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year. The award, sponsored by GM’s Fleet and Commercial division, recognized Bill and his teams for focusing on quantifiable improvements in fleet safety, quality, service, and reliability.

Bill’s attention to measureable results extends to Montgomery County’s sustainability initiatives. The County recently retrofitted Ford medium duty cargo vans with hybrid electric technology from XL Hybrids to support Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s goal to reduce Maryland’s Greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020.

The vans with XL Hybrids’ technology are being used at the County Maintenance Department by plumbers, electricians and road safety crews.

Since putting the hybrid electric vans in service, Bill and his team have been measuring performance and reliability of XL Hybrids technology. To date, the vans with the XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System have delivered an impressive 27% increase in fuel economy. Additionally, Vehicle uptime has been over 99.9%.

Plus, Bill noted, “we’re seeing an immediate return on investment with XL Hybrids through reduced operating costs, thousands of dollars in fuel savings, and reduced emissions.”

Based on the current results, Bill is projecting $154,000 in lifetime fleet operational savings and a 294-ton lifetime fleet reduction in CO2. Based on these impressive results, Montgomery County is planning to convert additional vans with the XL Hybrids system this year.
