National building materials and solutions provider chooses XL Hybrids’ fleet electrification solution

BMC, with headquarters in Atlanta, is one of the nation’s leading providers of building materials and construction services. The company recently selected XL Hybrids to help increase the sustainability of the its fleet vehicles.

The XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System is deployed in the company’s delivery fleet to  increase miles driven per gallon and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The pilot program for BMC includes four MY2015 Ford E-350 step vans used for delivering construction supplies, lumber and wood molding products to BMC’s regional stores in the Denver area. Each van drives over 20,000 miles annually in a rigorous duty cycle involving extreme altitude and temperature changes.

“With more than 1,000 vehicles in our fleet, BMC is actively looking to increase overall fuel economy,” said Daniel Daly, director of logistics and fleet operations for BMC. “We chose XL Hybrids’ technology because it can be deployed nationally and deliver results while standing up to our drive cycles. I have tracked XL Hybrids’ achievements for delivering on-road results for other fleets and look forward to success to expand this hybrid program in the future.”

As part of the hybrid electric conversions, XL Hybrids installed its proprietary wireless data connectivity system into all four step vans in the program – two hybrid electric and two non-hybrid vehicles. The vehicle powertrain data transmitted to the cloud-based analytics system will be used by XL Hybrids to measure MPG performance in the field for BMC, as well as track key performance indicators like idling, vehicle duty cycle and carbon dioxide emissions reduction.

“The vehicle data collection technology deployed on the vans allows XL Hybrids to offer BMC on-road MPG reporting and hybrid system service alerts,” said Clay Siegert, vice president and co-founder of XL Hybrids. “We look forward to continuing our industry-leading vehicle uptime of virtually 100 percent over millions of customer road miles.”

Another benefit of the hybrid electric conversions is the BMC step vans have been outfitted with eye-catching decal panels highlighting the carbon emissions-reducing hybrid technology on each Ford E-350.

The XL3 system works seamlessly in the background with minimal impact on fleet operations or service, and no driver training or infrastructure requirements. The technology has a quick adoption rate for fleets since there’s no need for special plugs, charging or fueling infrastructure.
